The Veteran Trade Exchange Initiative (VTEI) is a U.S.-based nonprofit headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina, dedicated to empowering military veterans through skilled trades, leadership development, and international service. Launching our inaugural U.S.–South Africa exchange program, with a vision to expand veteran-led workforce development partnerships to additional countries in the future.

Three Phases. One Mission.
Phase One
Train
Veterans participate in an intensive three-to-four-week training program in the United States, receiving instruction in skilled trades, leadership, project planning, safety, and cross-cultural preparation.
Phase Two
Deploy
Participants travel to South Africa for approximately eight weeks where they work alongside South African veterans on community infrastructure projects while providing hands-on trade instruction.
Phase Three
Exchange
Selected South African veterans travel to the United States to receive advanced training, professional development, and exposure to American trade practices before returning home to strengthen their own communities.
Across the United States, thousands of veterans possess leadership, discipline, and technical aptitude but need additional pathways into rewarding careers. In South Africa, many military veterans face limited employment opportunities while communities experience shortages of skilled tradespeople and essential infrastructure. VTEI bridges these challenges through a practical, veteran-led model that combines education, mentorship, and service into one sustainable program.
